In this dental blog… Dr Darryl Marsh continues with his list of 9 questions to ask yourself when you are looking for a partner in dental health.

In my last article I looked at the first question you should ask yourself, namely Is this person for real?, when considering who is right to look after your dental health. So now it is time to move onto the next important question when you are finding a dentist to match your needs.

Question # 2: Are they telling me the truth?

Today’s dental patients now have the benefit of seeing exactly what the dentist sees by the use of special high magnification ‘Intra-oral’ cameras. These cameras allow dentists to take photos of cracks, cavities and infections in and around our patients’ teeth. Although they will not show all dental problems, when they can be used, a picture really can say a thousand words.

Complex dental problem = complex decisions

You will find if you have a complex dental situation, where your options for treatment may be complex as well, many dentists will suggest you take time to ‘sleep on it’ and suggest a follow up appointment to give you time to think of questions and to clarify any concerns you may have.

A good dentist may even suggest you get a second opinion before you make a final decision. Often having a second explanation is helpful and gives patients the confidence they need to know they are making the right decision. These are common recommendations in our office.

Seeking a second opinion for dental work is recommended

No matter what the situation, a dentist telling the truth will have nothing to hide.

A reputable dentist will not be threatened or worried about their patients looking for a second opinion. No doctor or dentist on Earth has a 100% success rate with any treatment. Be comfortable when your dentist mentions this and what may need to be done in the future should any unforeseen problems arise.

This is a sign of integrity not weakness.

In fact, I never proceed with treatment unless the patient is 100% comfortable with the decision they have made and can show me that they understand all of the risks and potential complications that may arise.

So second opinions, asking questions (even stupid ones), researching are all great ways that you as the patient can be confident that the choice you are making, and the dentist you are working with, is the right one for you.
